SABBATH DID NOT START WITH ISRAEL
SABBATH DID NOT START WITH ISRAEL

Where did Sabbath start? With whom did it start or originate? When was it first mentioned in the Bible? It is true that immediately you mention the word Sabbath, every mind runs to Israel. But you will be surprised after reading this blog post. My argument comes only from the Bible with one reference outside of the Bible, just to support my claims. Here is one citation from Smith’s Bible dictionary that supports my claims.
According to Smith’s Bible dictionary, ‘Sabath’ (Shabbath) ‘a day or rest’ from ‘Sabbath’ ‘to cease to’ ‘to rest. The name is applied to diverse great festivals, but principally and usually to the seventh day of the week. The strict observance of which is enforced not merely in the general Mosaic code, but in the Decalogue itself. The consecration of the Sabbath was coeval with the creation’ Smith’s Bible dictionary page 574.
Thank you Smith’s Bible dictionary for saying the truth. The last statement brought forth my claims very clearly. It says that the consecration of Sabbath was coeval with creation. So it is not an Israeli originated service, no. Now let’s deal with the origin, let’s see where it came from, and to whom it was first given.
ORIGIN OF SABBATH
When we talk about Sabbath, the origin was from God the creator when he commanded the first man created, so it did not start with Israel but with Adam in the Garden of Eden Gen. 2: 15-17, read ‘’and the Lord God took the man and put him into the Garden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man saying, of every of the Garden thou mayest freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shall not eat of it. For in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shall surely die’.
The first thing you should know and observe from these passages should be the word ‘commanded the man’. Adam was the first man to receive the commandment of God. It might take you sometime to come to this knowledge. But I’m going to help you to know it very first. Do you remember that Adam’s first born Cain and his second Son Abel went out to sacrifice to God from their substances?
Yes! Did God command them to do so? Scripture needed.
Did God ever spoke to any of them before that incident? No! How did they come to the knowledge of sacrifice to God? This knowledge came from their father Adam. Sacrifice is part of God’s commandment and the seventh day rest or Sabbath was the concept here and it came from God, and in the book of Genesis 2:1-3. Do you see Israel here? No! Sabbath means ‘to rest’ on the seventh day.
Adam made serious effort to spread the concept of Sabbath to his children and to the rest of the world in his time. Do you not believe that Enoch saw his grand father or great grand father Adam? The Bible said he lived for 930 years Gen. 5:5. Again, did Enoch receive God’s commandment for anything? No! Instead, he was instructed on how to serve God by his own Parents and he walked with God, as he was instructed. If God had spoken to him it must be the time he had already been approved of God for living a transparent life.
Check your scriptures, from Adam to Noah God did not speak to any of them about his commandment. It was the commandment given to Adam that they all obeyed and rejected. Definitely some obeyed it and others rejected it, like Cain. Even Noah himself, the instruction he received was just the commandment to build the Ark to save his life and family, during the first destruction of the first world. But before this instruction, did God speak to him or gave him a commandment? No! It was still Adam’s commandment that he obeyed.
ANOTHER PERSON WHICH GOD COMMANDED WAS ABRAM OR ABRAHAM
Now the Lord said unto Abram, ‘Get thee out of thy country, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will show thee’ Gen.12:1. Get thee out is a command. But we are going to see that God really commanded Abraham about his commandments, his laws, his statutes and principles.
When Isaac wanted to leave the land because of famine, he went to Abimelech, king of the Philistine just to seek for his visa’s approval to pass through his country to Egypt Gen.26:1-2. God stopped him and gave him a promise to bless him within the time of that famine in the same land. It was then God told him that his father Abraham obeyed all his commandments, his laws, statutes and principles vs 5. Abraham received his Commandments and laws with his principles.
Remember that God did not command Isaac like Abraham, instead he gave him a promise, and even Isaac himself was a child of promise to Abraham Gen. 18: 10. The commandment given to Abraham extended to Jacob. This patriarch was the one surnamed Israel by the angel of the Lord in the wilderness Gen. 32:24-28. So the Sabbath commandment continues and entered into Egypt.
IN EGYPT ISRAEL OBSERVED THE SABBATH
The children of Israel observed this Sabbath commandment even in Egypt. As I was teaching about it somewhere, some enthusiasts confronted me and said, No sir. Then I gave them the opportunity to air their views. One came to the microphone and said, ‘the Sabbath commandment was given to Moses in the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt'. Then I said to him ‘can you quote the passage? He said yes, it is in Ex. 20:8-10.
Then I commanded to open it and to read it aloud to the hearing of the crowed, since they called me to order. And that passage says 'Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shall thou labour and do thy work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God''.
All eyes focused on me to hear what I would say. I called on them and asked, did you understand what you have read? At this question there was no answer. Then I read it again and told them that the passage was not where that commandment was given, but it was a reminder.
God reminded them of what they already knew and were doing in Egypt. At this time all people clapped in response. They were observing the Sabbath on a beautiful day in Egypt, and both Moses and Aaron came before Pharaoh and proclaimed before him saying 'thus says the Lord, let my people go that they may hold a feast for me in the wilderness' Ex. 5:1.
On hearing this word Pharaoh replied 'who is the Lord that I should obey his voice and let Israel go, I know not the Lord' vs 2. Actually Pharaoh did not know the Lord, his power nor his authority as the God of heaven and earth. So Pharaoh now branded the Sabbath observance of the people of Israel 'as idleness' Ex. 5:4-8.
This Sabbath was first given to Adam Gen. 2:15-17 which later was spread to Adam's children. Abram or Abraham received it again and lastly it came to Moses in the wilderness. So Sabbath did not start with Israel, no.
AMENDMENT OF THE SABBATH
The people of Israel having gone through six troubles according to prophet Job 5:19, they forgot the original way and style of the Sabbath. They went on and established 'the tradition of the elders'. This practice was based on 'washing of cups and turning down of tables' Mk. 7:1-7. it was this practice that was in place when Jesus was born.
When Jesus discovered that it was wrong, he began to teach the real Sabbath, but the people accused him with 'heresy and profaning of the Sabbath'. They told him that his disciple were not obeying the tradition of the elders' Mk. 7. However Jesus had told them that the Son of man is also lord of the Sabbath Mk.2:27-28, meaning that had power to amend the Sabbath.
The original Sabbath day did not contain a time to work on that day. But Jesus after the Sabbath teaching in the Temple would go out and begin to heal and to save Jon. Chapters 5 and 9. Even till today, the Sabbath commandment is still in force. In a different blog later, I will show you that God has not replaced the Sabbath day with Sunday.till tomorrow.
The Church just decided to take and follow Rome's doctrines and standard. Watch how we follow them in everything. The Roman setup placed Bishops above Pastors, is it not so? The we will show this in another blog, explaining why it is so.
God bless.
